This is the kind of album you listen to when you have absoloutely depleted all musical resources from your ipod or music device. When you have fully accepted the fact that you are about to listen to the most stupid shit ever written, then you might start enjoying yourself.
Ok quick background check, The Lonely Island is Andy Samberg along with 2 other SNL co-horts namely Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone. They shtick is basically nerds who either rap about nerdy shit or nerds who attempt to rap about gangstah stuff but FAIL miserably. My kinda deal!!!
Anyway like I said, you have got to have the right mindset when listening to this. It is a COMEDY album first and a hip-hop album second. When you try listening to the latter first, you probably won't last long cause the music isn't really stuff to write home about. Mostly monotone and generic riffs with overlaying layers to differentiate a chorus from a verse. Not really rocket science.
In terms of variety, the music tracks adapt different style ranging from electronic, jazz, hip-hop, r&b and old school rap. Their rapping isn't bad either, kind of reminicent of Beastie Boys and early eminem in delivery to be perfectly honest. They rap well when they intend to rap well and when they don't, it works out anyway because the delivery is comical, so you couldn't really judge it the same way.

Fuck land I'm on a boat motha fucka
I guess they have a certain niche audience even further for this since they do go deep on the geek references. Alot of people might be lost but they do touch on a lot of stuff that might be be funny to commoners like jizzin' your pants. They do have alot of collaborators though, T-Pain for example lend's his vocal stylings for a track called We're on a Boat, a song literally rapping about being on a boat. Justin Timberlake's track "Dick in a box" as well as their widely popular SNL digital short Lazy Sunday is also present so you know your getting atleast 3 tracks that have proven themselves to be legitimately funny. Jack Black, Natalie Portman and Nora Jones to name a few also contribute with varying levels of success.
In general if you enjoy the work the Lonely Island boys are doing outside of their music venture, then you will likely enjoy this album as well. If you don't give it a chance but don't say I didn't warn you.
